Chaiman’s Message
Greetings from DiSHAN
While official statistics may suggest a decline in the inflation rate, the reality is starkly different for ordinary citizens. The prices of essential commodities such as rice, vegetables, edible oils, sugar, and cereals have soared beyond the reach of common households. The gap between the rich and the poor continues to widen, and more people are slipping below—or dangerously close to—the poverty line. The hardships faced by the poor and marginalized are both real and alarming.
In response to these challenges, DiSHAN has placed strong emphasis on enabling people to take an active role in decision-making for their own holistic development. We focus on equipping them with knowledge and skills, helping them transition from a process of empowerment to a process of entitlement. It is truly encouraging to witness how people from our reference groups—especially women across different geo-specific areas—are recognising the importance of forming Self-Help Groups (SHGs) and people’s organisations to identify problems, prioritise needs, and take action for their own development. Our role remains that of a facilitator, accelerating the process of social change.
While there are countless issues that demand attention, we have chosen to concentrate our efforts within specific geographical areas and among particular reference groups, focusing on issues where we can make the most impact. Though DiSHAN has not achieved everything we aspire to, this is not due to a lack of sincerity or commitment, but rather the need to constantly adapt to the rapidly changing socio-economic and political landscape.
Throughout our journey, we have actively tapped into resources made available by the government for the benefit of the people. We work closely with local government bodies, Panchayat Samities, District Administration, Zilla Parishad, the District Magistrate of South 24 Parganas, and several national and international funding agencies. I am proud to say that our relationship with these institutions is built on mutual trust, shared development goals, and proven capability to deliver results.
I extend my heartfelt gratitude to the Anudip Foundation, Salt Lake, Sector-III, Kolkata, for their continued support and cooperation in our development initiatives. My sincere thanks also go to all individuals and organisations who have supported our mission, to my colleagues and committee members for their tireless and unconditional dedication, and most importantly, to our reference people—without whom none of this would have been possible.
I remain optimistic that in the year ahead, we will continue to receive the same level of support and cooperation in our shared development endeavour.
